Youth Mental Health Report Released
One in five young Australians are likely to be experiencing mental illness, and less than 40% are comfortable seeking professional help, according to a new report released by Mission Australia and the Black Dog Institute.
The Youth Mental Health Report found the rate of mental illness among young Australians aged 15-19 was much higher among females and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, while young people with a disability were also overrepresented.
CHH CEO Daniel Wong said the findings highlight the increasing vulnerability of Australian youth, and the need for greater supports to help them on their journey into adulthood.
Read the key findings and recommendations from the Youth Mental Health Report
Mentally healthy workplaces
The National Mental Health Commission has today launched a landmark Alliance to help create Australian workplaces that are mentally healthy.
The Youth Mental Health Report found the rate of mental illness among young Australians aged 15-19 was much higher among females and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, while young people with a disability were also overrepresented.
The Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance is a collaborative partnership between business, the mental health sector and government. The Alliance is providing the business sector with practical guidance about mental health designed to drive sustainable changes in business culture and practices. It is also developing an evidence-based business case for promoting mentally healthy workplaces.
Founding members of the Alliance include the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Australian Psychological Society, beyondblue, the Black Dog Institute, the Business Council of Australia, Comcare, the Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia, the Mental Health Council of Australia, Safe Work Australia, SANE Australia and the University of New South Wales.
Prof. Allan Fels, Chair of the National Mental Health Commission says the Alliance wants all Australian workplaces to be taking active steps to create mentally healthy workplaces, and fully realise the benefits to individuals, businesses and the community.
“Mental illness costs the Australian economy over $20 billion a year, while recent research from SANE Australia highlights that the majority of people feel unsupported when mentally unwell, and less than half of managers (43 per cent) have an understanding of mental illness.
“With almost half of Australians likely to experience a mental illness in their lifetime, the importance of having mentally healthy workplaces cannot be overstated.
“Mentally healthy workplaces prevent harm to the mental health of their people, make sure people who experience mental health difficulties are supported, and have positive cultures that are conducive to mental wellbeing.
“Businesses that invest in mental health are also more productive, innovative and likely to recruit and retain the best and brightest people. That’s why the work of the Alliance, and support from the business community is so important.”
Jennifer Westacott, Chair of the Mental Health Council of Australia, and Chief Executive of the Business Council of Australia says: “Apart from what good health means to individuals, having a healthy workforce is fundamental to the success of any business, large or small. Creating mentally healthy workplaces is an integral part of operating a productive and high performing business. It should not be seen as something additional for businesses to do.”
“Many businesses have already incorporated good practices regarding mental health and wellbeing into their operations, and a key part of the Alliance’s work is learning from and promoting these approaches so that other organisations can implement strategies relevant to them, and their workplace culture,” Prof. Fels continued.
Can we talk...about mental illness and suicide?
Research released by the National Mental Health Commission has found that Australians feel they lack the most basic knowledge of mental illness, and that many ‘don’t know a single sign to look out for’.
The report, titled ‘Can we talk… about mental health and suicide’, is based on informal group discussions around Australia which set out to recreate the conversations Australians are having about mental health and suicide at home, at work and with their friends.
National Mental Health Commissioner Janet Meagher says the study reinforces that while we have stories to tell, we are still struggling to make sense of mental illness and suicide.
"Around one in three Australians will experience a mental health difficulty at some stage in their lives, and when alcohol and drug-use disorders are included, this rises to close to one in two. However, we know that less than half of those Australians who experienced symptoms of mental illness in the past year actually consulted a health service.
"This study highlights that the stigma associated with accessing the mental health system is still one of the biggest barriers to treatment. We need to do better as a society to support people who need help. We can start by making mental health services a much higher priority for governments, and in the community," she said.
No single culture deals with mental illness and suicide well, according to the people who participated in the study. However, Australian culture is singled out for criticism for discouraging open and forthright communication and for a loss of community connectedness. Respondents of both sexes also agreed that there is a gender divide when it comes to talking about and seeking treatment for mental health difficulties (that is, men are less likely to talk about their problems or to seek help).
According to the study, suicide provokes strong, sometimes contradictory, emotions and reactions – and judgmental phrases permeate the language of many Australians. The research also found that whether someone is forgiving or judgmental in their outlook seems to turn on the degree to which they hold the individual, or their family, responsible for their condition (i.e. as a result of their genetic tree, mistreatment or neglect; or whether they contributed to its onset through their own folly due to drugs or other risky behaviour).
"We need to talk more about mental illness and suicide, and treat it as we would any other illness – as something that can affect anyone at any time. We need to make it okay for people to ask for help, and make it easier for people to talk to friends, family members or colleagues about how they are feeling," Commissioner Jackie Crowe said.
A number of participants in the study said they felt that Australia is in the midst of an epidemic of mental illness and suicide, while highlighting that if a health issue isn’t in the media, it can feel as if it doesn’t exist.
"This research was commissioned to provide insight into how we perceive and deal with mental health issues. Hopefully it can contribute to a more informed discussion on mental health difficulties and suicide prevention, that helps make these issues a priority for all Australians," Commissioner Crowe said.

Scoping study
ACSQHC/NMHC Scoping Study on National Standards in Mental Health Services
The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, in collaboration with the Commission, is conducting a scoping study on the implementation of National Standards in Mental Health Services, including the National Standards for Mental Health Services (2010) and the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (2012).
As part of the study, the Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care is conducting an online survey. They are keen to hear from people working in all roles in the Mental Health Sector who have been involved with the implementation of these standards.
We’d appreciate your assistance in completing the survey, particularly if you are someone with a lived experience of mental illness or a family member, friend or support person.
"This study highlights that the stigma associated with accessing the mental health system is still one of the biggest barriers to treatment. We need to do better as a society to support people who need help. We can start by making mental health services a much higher priority for governments, and in the community," she said.
Further details about the project and survey are available to download.

Join the conversation
From Friday 27 February to Thursday 5 March, we are encouraging people to meet in homes, workplaces, cafés, parks and public spaces around Australia to have ‘Contributing Life Conversations’.
These conversations are about sharing what ‘A Contributing Life’ means to you and those close to you, and discussing what gives each of our lives meaning and purpose. They are based on four simple questions, designed to take less than an hour.
This initiative is part of the National Mental Health Commission’s National Contributing Life Project, and will help build a rounded picture of people’s lives and experiences. The Commission will use this and other information to help drive meaningful improvement for the mental health and wellbeing of all Australians. It will also inform the 2014 Report Card on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention to be released in November 2014.
Ultimately, this is about ensuring the voices of people are at the front and centre of mental health reform.
Hosting a Contributing Life Conversation is your chance to be part of this important national conversation on mental health and wellbeing, and anyone can get involved.
Visit www.chh.org.au/en/involved to register or find out more.
Call for National Mental Health Leaders
National Mental Health Commission seeking mental health leaders
The National Mental Health Commission is seeking nominations of Australians with lived experience of mental health issues, either as a person living with mental illness or as a primary family member other significant support person, to work with and contribute to the Commission’s mission.
In partnership with the Mental Health Council of Australia and with the support of the National Mental Health Consumer and Carer Forum, the Commission wishes to support further development of existing leaders and advocates and find the next generation of national leaders.
National Mental Health Commission Chair Prof. Allan Fels says this initiative is important because it will help ensure that people have a voice and remain at the centre of decision-making about all the policies and services that impact on them.
“Nominees can be seasoned advocates wanting to take the next step, or those who have not been involved formally, but now want to make a contribution.
“We also want to support new voices, representative of a broad range of experiences to be heard and contribute to mental health reform in Australia,” Prof. Fels says.
Around 10 successful nominees will have the opportunity to participate in an individual mentoring and leadership development program and contribute to the National Mental Health Commission’s work. This may include co-chairing or membership of advisory groups to the Commission.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to helping all Australians achieve the best possible mental health and wellbeing. I encourage anyone interested to visit the Commission website and find out more.
“Because it will be all of us, working together and sharing insights and experiences that will truly make a difference,” Prof. Fels says.
